Cleaning the strings of a stringed instrument

Rosin dust settles on the strings every time you play and makes them stick together. Cleaning the strings of the stringed instrument is worthwhile after every playing: It looks much better and prevents the response of the strings from deteriorating. It also avoids having to clean the strings and fingerboard frequently with solvents.

Cleaning strings properly: this is how it's done

After playing, simply wipe the strings with a suitable cleaning cloth. It is particularly gentle on the rest of the instrument to work your way from the fingerboard towards the bridge. This way, the rosin is not spread unnecessarily over the fingerboard and the rosin dust that has fallen off during removal can still be wiped off the varnish later.

The right cloth for the strings

A small cloth is sufficient for cleaning the strings of stringed instruments. It should definitely be close-meshed. The most important thing is that the cloth material does not leave any residue and that the strings get their own cloth.

It is also helpful to wash a cloth from time to time to remove rosin residues from the cloth fibres. But a hand wash is also sufficient.

Fluffy cloths are not advisable because the fluff gets caught in the fine tension around the strings and then prevents the string from vibrating freely.

Remove rosin
